Cook Counselor – $22 Per Hour

Applicants must have Clean Driving Record.

Position Summary

Responsible for preparing and/or directing the preparation of food to be served, complying with all applicable sanitation, health and personal hygiene standards and following established food production programs and procedures. Responsible for appropriate use of facility supplies and equipment to minimize loss and waste.

Essential Functions

  • Follow daily schedule as posted or assigned.
  • Report any pertinent information regarding residents and facility to supervisor throughout your shift.
  • Check to see that all appliances are working properly.
  • See what meals have been planned for the day.
  • Prepare, cook and serve all meals during shift.
  • Check inventory.
  • Check with shift supervisor for any meals to be held for residents or off-site meals.
  • Clean all appliances after using.
  • Dispose of garbage.
  • Make sure dirty dishes and utensils are pre-washed and washed in dishwasher.
  • Store supplies, dishes and utensils away after use.
  • Follow all guidelines in accordance with New York State Department of Health Codes.
  • Store foods properly.
  • Thoroughly inspect kitchen and dining room for safety measures and sanitary conditions and report any damages or problems to Administration.
  • Be able to sit or stand as needed, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • May require walking, primarily on a level surface, for short periods throughout the day, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Be able to reach above shoulder heights, below the waist or lift as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday, with or without reasonable accommodation. Driver’s license required. 
  • During a declared disaster, assume and adhere to assigned Job Action role(s) consistent with Disaster Preparedness Plan.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Experience/Education/Skills/Abilities

High School diploma plus one year’s experience in commercial cooking preferred.

Employee must receive a certificate in Food Protection with six months from date of hire.

Cook/Counselor I: High School diploma plus one year’s experience in commercial cooking preferred.

Cook/Counselor II: Associate’s degree plus one year’s experience in commercial cooking preferred or High School diploma plus combined two years’ experience in commercial cooking or a mental health setting.

Cook/Counselor III: Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree plus a combined two years’ experience in commercial cooking or a mental health setting or High School diploma plus combined three years’ experience in commercial cooking or a mental health setting.

TSINY, a non-profit mental health services agency seeks Senior Cook for its Residential Facility located in Queens, NY.

$47,320 annual salary

Position Summary

Cook meals in conjunction to the Cook/Counselor. Cook meals when needed. Clean and maintain a highly hygienic environment in the kitchen and dining room. Oversee the cleanliness and organization of the refrigerator, cabinets and pantry on a weekly or as-needed basis. Escort recipients to supermarkets to facilitate food shopping. Order and shop for food for all recipients. Supervise menu planning with recipients.

Essential Functions

  • Check to see that all appliances are working properly.
  • Plan meals for the day.
  • Preparation, cooking and serving of all meals during tour of duty.
  • Check inventory.
  • Check to see that ADL kitchen is clean and in proper order.
  • Report any residents’ behavior(s) or pertinent information to supervisor.
  • Check staffing revised schedules.
  • Check with shift supervisor for any off-site trips/appointments that require bag meals, meals to be held for residents or off-site meals.
  • Clean all appliances after using.
  • Check to see that all appliances are turned off after use.
  • Dispose of garbage.
  • Make sure dirty dishes and utensils are pre-washed and washed in dish washer.
  • Store supplies, dishes and utensils away after use.
  • Follow all guidelines in accordance to New York State Department of Health Codes.
  • Report to supervisor at end of tour.
  • Make sure that kitchen closets/doors are securely locked.
  • Store foods properly.
  • Sign out.
  • Supervise Cook/Counselors.
  • Meet with supervisors as scheduled.
  • Attend staff meetings if on duty (read staff meeting minutes if absent).
  • Thorough general cleaning (i.e., window sills, refrigerator, freezer, etc.).
  • Order bread and milk.
  • Food shopping as needed.
  • Submit receipts for items purchased.
  • Thoroughly inspect kitchen and dining room for safety measures, sanitary conditions and report any damages, hazards and problems to administration.
  • Bake cakes or desserts as needed.
  • Participate and assist with supervising residents during fire drills.
  • Prepare and set up foods and supplies for special meetings.
  • CPR/First Aid Training
  • Coordinate/cook and assist with holiday and special activities.
  • Cook and participate in “Family and Friends Day.”
  • Make appointment with administration for employee evaluation.
  • Submit new menus.
  • Prepare ethnic foods in accordance to holidays and special occasions (if assigned).
  • Incident reports completed on same day of incident and report given to shift supervisor or administrators.
  • Attend Agency-wide meetings.
  • Attend special on-site and off-site training, seminars, conferences, etc.
  • Transport/escort residents to appointments or extra curriculum and recreational activities.
  • Availability to residents and other staff on an as needed and crisis basis.
  • Submit request for time off, at least two weeks in advance.
  • Check revised schedules for possible changes in hours/shifts and for holiday coverage.
  • Submit new ideas for groups.
  • Return correspondence that states, “Sign and return.”
  • Familiarization with personnel policy and emergency manuals.
  • Submit time sheets bi-weekly.
  • Provide supervision for residents during dining hours, if assigned.
